SYNOPSIS

UNDERCOVER: Exposing the far right is an explosive new documentary about the threat the far right poses to our democracy.

For the first time ever, HOPE not hate, the UK’s leading anti-extremist organisation, has allowed cameras to follow its team of investigators as they go undercover to expose the threat posed by the new extremists.

Following both well-known and obscure far-right figures across the UK and Europe, hidden-camera footage captures the unfiltered views of some of Britain’s most notorious extremists - people who claim to be patriots but whose ideas can sow division and unrest.

As the UK reels from the impact of this summer’s riots, UNDERCOVER reveals how the far right spread their hate-filled politics and exposes the shadowy Silicon Valley funder who gave money to the people behind an online platform disseminating discredited “race science” to legitimise prejudice among new audiences.

ABOUT HOPE NOT HATE

HOPE not hate is Britain’s foremost anti-extremist group. It has confronted the far right, exposed terrorists, and recently foiled a neo-Nazi assassination plot against a member of parliament. Director Havana Marking was given unprecedented access to the undercover operations of HOPE not hate.

UNDERCOVER
highlights the bravery and sacrifices of HOPE not hate’s diverse group of researchers and activists, who every day face abuse, threats and harassment as they work to expose the extremists.
Harry is an investigative journalist interested in the far-right, who goes undercover for HOPE not hate in the UK and Europe, capturing footage of notorious far right figures. The project leads to shocking discoveries about a network disseminating discredited scientific racism, with a funding trail leading straight to Silicon Valley.
Patrik Hermansson is a Senior Researcher at HOPE not hate.Patrik’s own experience of going undercover in the US saw him witness the deadly violence in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017, as detailed in the New York Times. Acting as Harry’s handler, Patrik travels to Europe and gathers supporting evidence for Harry’s discoveries.
Anki Deo is a Senior Policy Officer at HOPE not hate. She supports the organisation’s work on the issues and policies that give rise to far-right activity. This often means helping politicians, local authorities and the charity and voluntary sector react to anger in communities. In August 2024, during the riots that followed the horrific attack in Southport, Anki helped to coordinate the dissemination of information to local leaders and migration support services to keep people safe as the far right whipped up anger and spread disinformation through communities.
Georgie Laming is Director of Campaigns and Communications at HOPE not hate where she managed the successful campaigns to remove Andrew Tate from social media platforms and to expose the activities of British media mogul Paul Marshall on social media, as well as working to thwart far-right attempts at gaining power. Prior to joining HOPE not hate, Georgie campaigned for women’s rights and increased access to housing with various UK charities.
Joe Mulhall is Director of Research at HOPE not hate, and a former undercover operative. He is the author of numerous books on postwar fascism, including Drums in the Distance: Journeys into the Global Far Right. Joe opens up HOPE not hate’s historical archives documenting the UK’s long anti-fascist movement, works to bring Tommy Robinson to justice and reveals the emotional impact of dealing with threats and harassment from the far right.
Nick Lowles is the CEO and founder of HOPE not hate, with decades of experience in the anti-fascist movement. UNDERCOVER shows Nick and Joe’s bravery in the face of a six-month campaign of harassment by a Tommy Robinson supporter. While the man in question has since been sentenced to four years in prison, further online death threats against Nick’s life emerge during the riots.
